Course Description

The Integrate Darnaway Project course on Practical Tree Marking for Continuous Cover Forestry offers an innovative, field-based training experience designed to advance continuous cover forestry (CCF) transformation.

As part of the wider Integrate initiative supported by the European Forest Institute (EFI), this training introduces a pioneering digital approach: participants use tablet computers running Integrate (I+) software to conduct virtual tree-marking simulations directly in the forest plots.

This technology instantly completes all the tree marking calculations and presents real-time feedback on timber product assortments, economic returns, and biodiversity conservation values (including up to 34 tree microhabitat types), bridging traditional silviculture and conservation management with modern data-driven decision-making.

Learning Objectives

  • Master CCF Theory & Transformation: Apply crown thinning and selective stem marking principles to transform even-aged conifer plantations into resiliant, irregular stand structures.
  • Identify Quality Furutre Tree Retentions: Recognise superior timber quality, vigour, crown development, and wind stability required for long-term retention.
  • Decide on Quality-Driven Tree Removals:  Target competitor removals to relive crown competition, improve residual increment, and preserve stand stability.
  • Manage Understorey & Regeneration Niches: Regulate canopy light transmission to promote light-demanding Scots pine regeneration while controlling aggressive beech dominance.
